Youth Education

Page history last edited by Oliver 10 years, 8 months ago

Florus has clearly been thinking long and hard about rebuilding the paladin orders in some form or another and has determined that really, the training of paladins must begin very early. As in from 5 years of age. However, everything that super young proto-paladins should be taught is pretty much applicable to all children and so Florus would like to start a general education program for all children age 5 to 15. Her aim is that from 5 to 10, all children will share an identical education. At age 10, those with the gift (a tiny number) with study with a tutor (who will teach no more than a handful of children at a time) and learn draconic, magic theory and general skills. Those identified as being of strong physical builds and the strongest moral fibre will be sent to learn Olmypian and faith skills along with some basic combat training. When these children reach 15, they will begin their official training as paladins, priests, druids or mages as appropriate.

From a rules mechanics perspective, children can be assumed to have two seasons free a year to learn without messing them up mentally or depriving them of a childhood. Expanding this to 3 seasons would mean teaching them longer each day and with less holidays which would not only deprive them of their childhood but also be quite damaging to their parents trades as it can be assumed that the children help their parents with their work (learning a trade in the process). Although the children learn for two seasons a year, these seasons of study are actually spread out over the whole year. i.e. its 2 seasons length of time, evenly spread throughout the calender year.

Since you cannot guarantee the skills or abilities of the teachers for the children, it would be impossible to lay out exactly how much xp the kids pick up per season of study. However, using the teaching emchanic, it can be assumed that anyone teaching children is able to deliver 5 xp to a class of kids per season and has the ability being taught high enough not to be a problem (given the low levels we are talking about here).

Children beginning their schooling at 5 already speak Nassian at 5.

Seasons of teaching

  1. Artes Liberales
  2. Athletics
  3. Philosophiae
  4. Speak Elven
  5. Speak Dwarven
  6. Etiquette
  7. Brawl
  8. Animal Handling
  9. Survival
  10. Single Weapon

At this point the child is 10 years old and can read and write, do basic sums, can speak the basics of Elven and Dwarven and is physically fit and healthy and understands the basics of carrying a spear (essential since they will join the militia later in life). They will also have learnt basic skills in etiquette and survival, both very useful to a child in a strange and dangerous world.

The curriculum for 10+ is more specialised with the gifted kids seperated off to study with private tutors and the children that show a flair for leadership, combat, community spirit and strong moral fibre seperated of to study for the priesthood and the paladins. Since the gifted are limited by their very rare occurence, they are naturally limiting. Since the paladins want only the best of the best, it is suggested that the annual paladin intake is restricted to only the top 10 children a year.

The gifted kids, Given the very low numbers and the ability to use books and quality teachers at this level, it can be assumed that the children studying get 8 xp per season. Florus would very much like the Druids and magi to suggest a curriculum for them but suggests this as a starting point.

  1. Draconic
  2. Draconic
  3. Artes Liberales
  4. Philosophiae
  5. Draconic
  6. Draconic
  7. Magic Theory
  8. Draconic
  9. Draconic
  10. Magic Theory

That should put them within a hands breath of Draconic 4 (i.e. what they need to read and write it) and will give them artes liberales, philosophiae and magic theory at 2. A good solid base to build an apprenticeship on.

The Paladin kids would get

  1. Olympian
  2. Athletics
  3. Brawl
  4. Single Weapon
  5. Olympian
  6. Olympian
  7. Magic Theory
  8. Artes Liberales
  9. Philosophiae
  10. Ride

That gives them Olympian 2 (with about 9 xp to the next level), athletics, brawl, artes liberales and philosophiae at 2 and ride and magic theory at 1.

For priestly candidates the curriculum would be

  1. Olympian
  2. Olympian
  3. Artes Liberales
  4. Philosophiae
  5. Olympian
  6. Olympian
  7. Magic Theory
  8. Madicine
  9. Chirurgy
  10. Olympian

Which gives them an excellent grasp of Olympian and basic medical skills (given that priests act as the primary healers within the community).

From the age of 15, Florus sees that the druids, mages, priests and paladins will take the youngsters as apprentices, novitiates, squires, etc and will conduct their training as they wish, building upon the strong base already developed.

Florus proposes all this and asks the other PCs for their input. Its clear she really wants to do this but is happy to discuss the details.
